preparation

I keep being under-confounded. We were so well prepared for cultural differences that I am continually surprised (disappointed, even?) by how un-alien everything is. It's possible that we prepared ourselves for cultural norms and then have been constantly interacting with the most Westernized echelon. Or maybe they thought it was just better for us to be prepared for the most extreme possibility.

In terms of clothes, I definitely packed more conservatively than I needed to. The clothes here are so Western--although, of course, the Westernized places are where I have access at the moment. And skin coverage is the thing. If I had to do the packing over, I would bring all of my favorite tight, low-cut clothes (well, such as they are) and just buy several black or grey long sleeve shirts and sweaters to wear under them. That's what people do here--layer contemporary Western styles over skin-covering underlayers.
